I have been called to start blogging again, welcome to my new site. Why MoonlightCricket.com? Where did that name come from?
The above blog subtitle is a verse I wrote this past summer (2008) while sitting out on the grass under the pine trees in my backyard. It sums up perfectly where the idea for the name came from. The day had been hectic and I was mentally and physically exhausted. I needed to be outside. I needed to be still and listen; to settle my mind and body. Under the pines sitting in an upright position on the grass in the moonlight listening to crickets just seemed like the only thing to do at that moment.
The sound of the crickets song has always been so very soothing to me since I was a teenager growing up on an old farm in the Finger Lakes region of western New York state. I have always looked forward to their arrival during the summer and continued to cheer on the last ones left in late October and early November. For whatever reason, I feel a special connection with crickets that I just can’t explain. They just seem to fit with my love of the outdoors and my Zen practice of sitting meditation. Just sitting and listening to them is one of my fondest activities of the summer.
Here’s a poem by a Zen teacher that I keep in my ‘zen nature’ collection… I’d like to share it with you today:
All night long I think of life’s labyrinth…
It’s in the dark that eyes probe earth and heaven,
In dream that the tormented seek present, past.
Enough! The mountain moon fills the window.
The lonely fall through, the garden rang with cricket song.
~ Betsugen (1294-1364)
Welcome back to the blogosphere! I think “moonlight cricket” is a lovely name. It reminds me of an image from N. Scott Momaday’s Way to Rainy Mountain where he sees a cricket silhouetted in the moon: an image of the wholeness of nature.
thanks lorianne! it’s good to be back! i love that imagery of a cricket silhouetted in the moon… if i had any artistic talent i’d try to come up with a logo just like that!
it’s funny… the day after that evening i registered moonlightcricket.com and have been thinking about getting back to blogging ever since. the job change had a lot to do with my success with getting back to the blogosphere.
blessings to you and yours this thanksgiving!
Glad to see you at it again! I too have a special fondness for crickets.
John, I’m looking forward to reading your blog. And I’ve added Moonlight Cricket to the blogroll on Ox Herding.
I hope you and your family enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.
Barry
barry, thank you. i took a quick peek at your blog and i’m grateful we have found each other.
deep bow,
john
I also love the crickets. I grew up in Virginia where the summer night is but a song…of crickets, frogs, locusts. I miss that in Colorado. We have a few crickets and frogs, but it is not the song that it is back east. I suppose the coyotes fill the night occasionally with their song. Nice to see you here in the blog world John. Peace, Molly
thanks molly. i am happy to have found your blog. coyotes… i don’t think i’ve ever heard them live and ‘in person’… that would be something to experience.
Ah, a visit back to memories of my childhood in Southeastern Ontario. Surprise – another moon-sitter amongst the crickets! Aho, John. I am moved to type in your comments, only to discover….. Delight! The memory of moonlit nights in the Rockies as an adult listening to the nearing swell of haunting coyote calls in the darkness. Heart smiles. Looking forward to enjoying Moonlight Cricket as much as I enjoyed your previous blogs. Welcome back.
silence, glad you are here… and i’m glad i could assist in arousing happy memories. peace to you and yours.
John,
This is something I didn’t know about you. It’s interesting how we learn new things about people we think we know, and whom we’ve known all our lives. Thanks for sharing. I’ve enjoyed walking home from work this fall, and hearing those last crickets, late into November…
